Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party Review

A Madhouse chock full of insane fun!

Thick Seperator

Rayman is on the run from his eternal arch nemeses, the RABBITS…err..RABBIDS! Good thing for him they got struck by lightning, now he can get back to his place, only to find that the lightning strikes his antenna and they have invaded his TV!

Sure enough when the game first loads its expected to be a very kid friendly experience, with your standard set of do this do that etc, however what follows after completely sets this game apart from your standard flock of Wii games utilizing the Balance Board and the Wiimote with Nunchuck.

Let’s go into the single player experience first, the menu is setup as a simple TV guide for the day of the week, with time slots from 7 am to 10 pm. Each time slot is blank at first and takes you to another screen where you can choose which “channel” you would like to allocate to that timeslot. Each channel is basically a different game that you can play and requires a minimum number of points before it can be allocated to that timeslot. When you achieve the minimum score required and the slot is allocated with the game you played, the caption at the bottom of the TV guide tells you how many more you need to unlock the next day.

Each of the events are unique, so unique that they are practically individual games part of a giant package that is Raving Rabbids. Prior to each level you are given a quick intro to what the rabbid is doing as, we assume, Rayman is flipping through channels, only for the rabbid to realize it is a tennis player, ending up with the frying pan from the cooking channel, with a Walrus that needs to be fed from the animal channel, it’s absolutely hilarious to watch.

Among them a racing game on rocket powered farm harvester, shoplifting where you flick the controller repeatedly to keep your lawnmower flying to pick up fellow rabbids from the windows, streets, and rooftops of houses they are stealing from. Another type of game is a shooter interestingly named Star Worse where a series of asteroids or space stations are in your way and using the Wiimote must draw the shapes on the aforementioned debris hurling towards you, this one is a pretty big challenge later on when seven or eight things are on the screen at once.

The ones along these lines seemed very straightforward, yet still challenging to keep you interested, however when we arrive at the games that require more than just tilting or flicking the controller, this is where the game goes from good to amazing.

Flipping burgers seems simple enough at first, yet you will quickly realize you can’t just sit there and slowly move the controller back and forth, you REALLY have to shake it hard like a real frying pan! Great workout however, definitely would work up a sweat or at the very least make you switch arms to keep going.

There is another called B.R.U.S.H. on the military channel, yes for those of you who get the reference to M.A.S.H. the name is a parody of that. More varied than the burgers one, we would probably recommend that you try this one pretending to actually do the moves it asks, you will see why. This game in particular requires you to do 4 actions at the Sarge’s command, hold the controller sideways and move it up and down like you would brush your teeth, hold the A button and move it around your chin to shave, hold it up near your ear and push the Q-tip in and out to clean your ears, just watch it don’t actually whack yourself with the Wiimote and hold the B button and rotate it in circles around your chest, arms, or anywhere to apply the deodorant . This one requires quick impulse responses, there is a countdown and you score higher the quicker you can recognize the item in your rabbids hand and perform the action you are with it.  There is however a slight frustration as the Wiimote sensor sometimes can’t recognize the difference between brushing the teeth and cleaning the ears, and its less likely to recognize the shaving unless you really really move the Wiimote in the maneuver it wants.
